Brewtubers Yeast Experiment 2020 – Brewing and Bottling

Published by:

Berserk In BT YE 2020

Brewtubers Yeast Experiment 2020 is here!  The premise is 13 brewers brew the same recipe.  The same water profile, malt, hops, and timing. Then each brewer drops in a different yeast to ferment with.  A wide range of yeasts to be able to determine the qualities and tastes that the yeast imparts on a brew. Such a cool concept.  I am honored to be a part of it.

My journey into this experiment began early one morning.  I couldn’t sleep. I was surfing the Facebook groups and I ran across a post in Brewtubers.  I was intrigued by the idea, so I started down the rabbit hole.

Smoked Pumpkin Imperial Stout

Published by:

Smoked Pumpkin Imperial Stout, a new creation from Brewmaster Jerry! It brings together two thing I love, brewing beer and smoking foods. So for another try at something different, I decided to smoke some pumpkins. It is really cool, I sourced the pumpkins from a former student. He grows them, and then gives a bunch of money to charity. So, this is a brew with a good cause being supported from it.

Zombie Level 8 Brews – A Single Hop Experiment Series

Published by:

A single hop experiment can be fun.  When you are looking for a great brew to make over and over again, you have to have a good recipe.  You also want to have a little variety in hops so you can have some fun too.  So, this beckoned my Zombie Level 8 Series.  I enjoyed Three Floyd’s Zombie Dust, so I formulated a recipe that is homage to it.  The great thing about about this is that it allows the hops to shine.  Why level 8 you ask?  8 ounces of hops in each batch.

Brewing: Neapolitan Dynamite – A Milkshake IPA

Published by:

Time to brew a new milkshake IPA, Neapolitan style!  I devised a recipe to hopefully showcase all the flavors of a Neapolitan blend of flavors for my recipe, NEAPOLITAN DYNAMITE.  What I got was an unexpected result.  I loved brewing this and designing the recipe.  I am already formulating my changes for the next revision.

Brewing At A New Location

Published by:

So over the summer, I moved.  It is now a whole new brewing experience at a new brewing location.  You don’t realize just how set in your ways you get, till you can’t use those ways any more.  It was time to try out the new home brewery location, and try to make a new beer style that I had not tried before.  Granite Milkshake is a milkshake IPA that was formulated by yours truly, Brewmaster Jerry.  Let’s take a peak at how things went.

Brewing With Friends – Outdoor Brewing At It’s Best

Published by:

So, I am loving this snow day!  I am getting caught up with a bunch of website stuff!  A few weeks ago, I had a great time doing an outdoor brewing with my buddy Sully.  You may remember him from my outdoors brewing session with him last year.  This time, he was brewing his first 5 gallon batch.  How could I say no?  I of course couldn’t let him have all the fun, I brewed a 5 gallon batch as well!

Sully wanted to brew his Caribou Slober kit, so I figured I would do a brown ale as well. Continue reading

Brewing – Phishin’ For Cookies Stout

Published by:

I realized that I am a but delayed in this post. I don’t know how I missed doing one for this. Well, my first outdoor brewing on my new burner was a blast! Here is the scenario: December 30, 2016… 9:30 PM…. 27 degrees….Felt like 15. I was streaming the Phish 12/30/16 show from MSG live. What a great way to start a brewing night!

The recipe that I am working with will turn out like an oatmeal raisin cookie stout, hopefully.

Brewing With Wet Hops – SMaSHing Nuggets 2 And More

Published by:

So I harvested a full five gallon bucket of wet hops from my garden, and I mean a FULL bucket.  With the harvesting  all that Nugget hops,  it was time to make another SMaSH beer. This time I decided to make two variants, one with light malt and one with dark malt.  Last year, I made SMaSHing Nuggets.  This year, I modified the recipe a little bit, and created SMaSHing Nuggets 2.

When I went out and harvested, I barely got much off the plant from the inside parts of the two bines.  I recklessly went through and pulled out handfuls of whole hops, from all over the bines.   In less than an hour I had filled a 5 gallon bucket and still left a bunch of the plants. So, I had pounds of hops to work with. Wet hop beers are a great thing to make, as the fresh flavors cannot be beat. So I started into SMaSHing Nuggets 2 just a few hours after the harvest.img_20160917_124604147img_20160917_124607679

Brew Day – Bye Week Porter

Published by:

So, the Buffalo Bills are my team.  It is the bye week.  Let’s brew a beer during the normal time of the Bills Game!  Hence, the Bye Week Porter is born.

I got the 007 starter up and running in prep of this.   Gotta love getting some happy yeast while using the StirStarter.  I now overbuild my starters and split off some to save for the next starter.  This beer has Chocolate Malt and Dark Crystal Malt as a steeping setup.

During this brewing, I also busted out two new toys.  The GEEKHOM Digital Thermometer and some Big Time BBQ Silicone Gloves.  These two new tools are great.  The thermometer allows me to keep my mash nice and steady, and not too high.  The gloves are great, as you can actually dip your hands right into your wort to clean out the inside of LME containers!

I have a few projects upcoming that will use this beer.  I plan on beer brining my turkey, and may even try some baking with it!  Oh yeah….and drink some too!

I finally took a selfie during brewing!

Things to ponder:

  • I hit my target gravity RIGHT on the button.  If it ferments well, it should be right about 6%
  • I like my new toys.
  • Porters are tasty, and it has been a while since I brewed one!
